Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday inaugurated Mashreq Digital Bank, terming it a significant milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward a fully digital and cashless economy.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the premier highlighted that digitalisation is the need of the modern era and stressed that reducing human intervention and promoting paperless transactions would ensure transparency, efficiency, and progress in the financial sector.

The Prime Minister noted that Pakistan’s youth, being the country’s largest demographic, are a major driving force behind the adoption of digital banking. He said the establishment of Mashreq Digital Bank will further accelerate economic modernisation and strengthen financial inclusion.

The ceremony was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad, and Finance Secretary Imdad Ullah Bosal.

Finance Minister Aurangzeb underlined that global rating agencies have acknowledged Pakistan’s improved economic performance, reflecting stability under the current government.

Mashreq Bank Chairman Abdulaziz Al Ghurair expressed pride in becoming part of Pakistan’s economic reform and growth story, while CEO Mohammad Humayun Sajjad shared that digital payments in the country had surged 30% over the past year, driven largely by the youth.

At the conclusion of the event, PM Shehbaz and Ghurair officially inaugurated the bank, marking Mashreq as the second licensed digital bank in Pakistan.
