ISLAMABAD – July 22, 2025

The National Assembly Standing Committee has decided to probe the recent sharp increase in sugar prices and identify the key beneficiaries behind the price hike. A sub-committee has been formed to examine sugar exports, duty-free imports, and potential collusion between political, bureaucratic, and industrial actors.

The Committee also discussed Pakistan’s ambitious \$60 billion export target by 2029, presented by the Ministry of Commerce. Lawmakers raised doubts, citing challenges like high energy costs, limited export surplus, and industrial closures.

Officials acknowledged shortfalls in past export goals and highlighted hurdles such as climate change, low crop production, and global trade disruptions.

Meanwhile, clarity was given on auto imports, with no plans to allow five-year-old used cars. A new auto policy is in the works for implementation from July 2026.

The Committee also reviewed the Trading Corporation of Pakistan's (TCP) audit issues and emphasized accountability and transparency in loan transactions.
