Pakistani rupee appreciates slightly to 279.96 against US dollar in interbank market

The Pakistani rupee (PKR) posted a marginal gain against the US dollar in Thursday’s interbank session, appreciating by 1.05 paisa to close at 279.96 per USD versus 279.97 a day earlier. During intraday movement, the currency traded as high as 280.75 (bid) and as low as 281.00.

In the open market, exchange firms quoted the dollar at 280.30 for buying and 281.05 for selling.

Against major global currencies, PKR strengthened 37.62 paisa or 0.12% against the Euro to settle at 325.60 compared to 325.97 previously, while it gained 23.81 paisa or 0.06% against the British Pound to close at 376.07 from 376.31.

Conversely, PKR slipped 11.77 paisa or 0.03% against the Swiss Franc, closing at 349.32, and weakened 0.53 paisa or 0.30% against the Japanese Yen to end the session at 1.7655 compared to 1.7602. The rupee also eased by 1.06 paisa or 0.03% versus the Chinese Yuan, closing at 40.16 from 40.15.

Meanwhile, the local currency edged up 0.28 paisa against the Saudi Riyal to 74.65 and gained 0.29 paisa against the UAE Dirham to close at 76.22.

So far in FY2024-25, the rupee has appreciated by Rs3.80 or 1.36% against the US dollar, while on a calendar year basis, it has improved by 16.01 paisa or 0.06%.

In the money market, benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates slipped by 1 basis point to 10.10% and 10.35%, respectively.
