PPL Makes Significant Oil & Gas Discovery in Punjab’s Dhok Sultan Block

September 04, 2025 –

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), one of the country’s leading exploration and production (E&P) companies, has announced a major oil and gas discovery in District Attock, Punjab.

According to the company’s notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the discovery was made at the well “Dhok Sultan-03”, located in the Dhok Sultan exploration license area. PPL holds a 75% working interest in the block, with Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) owning the remaining 25%.

The well was spudded on January 18, 2025, and drilled down to a depth of 5,815 meters to evaluate hydrocarbon potential in the Patala and Lockhart formations. Testing confirmed encouraging flow rates:

  • 1,469 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and 2.56 MMscfd of gas at 1,147 psig on a 32/64” choke.
  • 2,113 bpd of oil and 4.13 MMscfd of gas at 813 psig on a 48/64” choke.

This marks the second discovery in the Dhok Sultan Block, underlining the untapped potential of the Potwar–Kohat sub-basin. PPL emphasized that the find strengthens the country’s indigenous hydrocarbon base, reducing dependence on imported energy and conserving foreign exchange.

The company further stated that the success at Dhok Sultan-03 reinforces the importance of deploying advanced geological evaluation and drilling technologies in Pakistan’s mature basins to unlock additional reserves.
