In a significant move, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from India, citing India's continued indirect purchases of Russian oil. This is in addition to tariffs already announced earlier, further straining U.S.-India trade relations.

The decision follows a breakdown in trade talks between Washington and New Delhi, marking the most serious challenge to bilateral ties in recent years. The move also comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China later this month — his first in over seven years.

The new tariff announcement was made shortly after Trump’s top envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Russian officials in Moscow to push for a resolution to the war in Ukraine.

Analysts warn the tariffs could disrupt global trade flows, especially for emerging markets already facing economic headwinds.
